The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has strong presence in the states of Kerala, West Bengal and Tripura. As of 2007, CPI(M) is leading the state governments in these 3 states. The party emerged out of a split from the Communist Party of India in 1964. CPI(M) claimed to have 867 763 members in 2004.
